Details for Next Homework - Man-on-the-Street Videos

Video Assignment #1 (50 points): Shoot 3 man-on-the-street interviews on a topic of news value. It can’t be “do you like the Hunger Games?,” but instead must be a social or policy issue where people have different opinions (“is the health care bill constitutional?”). No interview should be more than 2 minutes, but you’ll turn in the unedited interviews for grading. Bring your data cards to class next week. You’ll be graded on how well the shot was framed and lit, as well as whether the question was framed well. You must know the full name of the people you interview, so bring that info to class and we can add a title frame when we edit the 3 interviews together in class.

Sports & Activity on Campus

On a surprisingly beautiful day, campus was abuzz with physical activity.

Chess may be the game of kings, but Frisbee is decidedly the sport of scholars, as this UMD student on the Mall shows.

Man and Machine in Harmony - Alana Yzola

Sophomore mechanical engineer and hip hop enthusiast Kendrick Daly, gives me an inside look at his personal home studio as well as his creative process in composing his own music.

Daly is fortunate enough to have Logic Studio software, which is the same technology used by artists and producers such as the Fugees.

Daly does not take his music lightly.  His home studio consists of two Macbook Pros (one with the sole purpose of  holding over 200 original compositions), a full electronic keyboard, a pair of state-of-the art Beats by Dre' headphones, and a journal full of lyrics.

Creating compositions is not always an easy task.  Daly has a case of Writer's Block as he attempts to compose a chorus for his latest song.

Daly uses a combination of sampling beats from previous artists and mixing them with his own beats he makes on his piano.  Daly explains that a good composition takes him a bit of time. "it could take about three hours to a whole day," Daly says.

Staying in Shape at the Gym

Despite busy schedules, students at the University of Maryland find the time to exercise and stay in shape. Physical fitness is not easy, and students take it seriously.

This young man recently had mononucleosis, otherwise known as "mono." Returning to the gym is a sign that he is well.

People can bond in the weight room and learn valuable skills about working with others. These two boys rotated the use of this machine.

It may not be warm enough to go swimming outdoors, but the indoor pool at the recreation center allows swimmers to stay in shape.

McKeldin Mall, All Hours and Spots

At 12:20 PM. As the weather gets warmer, students flock to the mall midday to celebrate the coming of spring.

At 4:30 PM. While still warm and sunny, students are mostly finished with classes, leading to a quieter mall as night approaches.

At 10:00 PM. Standing at the foot of the ODK fountain, there's something serene about the mall at night, when an area so crowded a few hours ago sits perfectly still, waiting for the sunrise.

Arizona Feature Fiesta

In Arizona, green plants can grow in beds of rock, making them the perfect landscaping tool for golf courses there.

The practice putting green at Continental Golf Course was busy the day following the area's first rainstorm in nearly 90 days.

Plants thrive in the sun outside Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Ariz. where the Cleveland Indians fell to the San Francisco Giants by two runs.
